A breast exam is a short and important exam to look for potentially cancerous lumps or abnormalities in the tissue. It’s very similar to the way a doctor will feel your throat to assess the condition of your lymph nodes and thyroid.

Likely, the exam will take only 10 or 15 minutes. The doctor will use their fingertips to feel for lumps in your breast tissue using light pressure, then medium pressure, then deep pressure. This will help them detect potential lumps in each layer of breast tissue.

How often you need a breast exam depends on your personal risk factors, including age and family history. Clinical breast exams can be completed at your yearly physical or well-woman exam. Mammograms may be a separate recommendation by your doctor which will also depend on your personal risk factors.

The good news is that you can do self-exams on your breasts daily if you’d like. Talk to your healthcare provider or book an appointment at Harbison Covenant to learn the proper technique for performing a self-exam, as well as
